This statement may be controversial because many don't believe they need to be saved. However, in Romans 3:23 we learn all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The payment for sin is death but through Jesus we can have the gift of eternal life (refer to Romans 6:23). It's a gift, it can't be earned, death is earned through sin but life is freely given through Jesus when we believe in Him (John 3:16) and this belief is proven when we trust in Him. This is much more than just saying a simple prayer but looks more like a life surrendered, clinging to Jesus and turning from sin. John 3:16 tends to overshadow John 3:17, but the message is just as necessary. Sometimes the world views God as this harsh judge who is just waiting to condemn them but His intentions are made clear in John 3:17 when it mentions that God did not send Jesus to condemn the world but that through Him they might be saved.
